PRESS RELEASE

Stewart MacdonaldLocal Councillor disappointed at Royal Mail refusal to re-site Waterside Post Box

Kirkintilloch East and Twechar Councillor, Stewart MacDonald has expressed his astonishment at the speed with which the Royal Mail removed an established postbox in Waterside and their refusal to re-site it nearby.

He said ," I have received a number of complaints from residents and Waterside Community Council who are very upset at the sudden loss of this vital amenity on 25th November 2008.

I have protested in the strongest terms to Royal Mail as I am not satisfied there was adequate consultation prior to the removal of the postbox .The residents around that area are mainly elderly and would have difficulty reaching the one remaining postbox in the village.

While it is understood that the land-owner requested the postbox be removed, there may be space immediately nearby on either Burnbrae Road or Bankhead Road where the postbox could have been re-sited and I do not feel that Royal Mail has properly considered this.

There are normally strict rules on the removal of a postbox.  I am concerned that Royal Mail may be using requests by private land-owners to move postboxes as a way of cutting a service by stealth.

The shocking, sudden nature of this postbox removal has taken many residents completely by surprise.

It is no wonder many feel abandoned by Royal Mail."
