December 2011 Newsletter

The crowd gathered to do the count down for Kirkintilloch's light switch on despite the rain and wind and I managed to get even wetter from the water on the stage roof.  Never mind the lights were lovely.
Met with members pf the Cycle Co-op to look at 20mph in built up areas to make sure our young cyclists are safer.
Picked the prizewinners for equality poems and posters and was amazed at how good they all were.  Una and I will present the prizes later in the month.
Had a great night at Mugdock Park meeting all the volunteers who work with the Rangers throughout the district.
Lenzie Light switch-on was magical despite the terrible weather.  The musicians and choiristers fought the wind and rain to welcome santa and entertain the crowd.  Well done to all of them.
The Clyde Valley Partners are still trying to put together business plans for individual services which we could agree to deliver jointly.  I am not agreeing to put something in front of the Council which is not favourable for East Dunbartonshire.
The School Carol Concert was a joy and I am sure the parents were very proud of the orchestra and choirs.  It is lovely to join in the singing.
The storm saw our schools being shut and staff sent home early on the advice of the police.  Luckily the damage was not too bad although our repair centre was very busy.  I am still chasing dates to get work done.
Attended the Road Safety Calender competition and again some wonderful talent from our young people.
The Christmas Panto at Oxgang was a great way to spend a few hours totally entertained by the children
Enjoyed a night with Woodhead and Lenzie Gymnastics and then helped give out the medals.  I was amazed at how agile and enthusiastic they all were.
Probably the most important announcement this year was our budget settlement this month.  It was better than we had thought it would be which is good news.  I have been chairing meetings since August looking at savings for next year and we found that we already had enough consensus savings agreed which we could take to Council.  In February we will confirm our reserves and agree our capital budget but no more savings are required this year although more will be needed over the next two years.  It was a positive end to the year which has been challenging but also has ambitious  projects planned for the future.

Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
