Welcome from David Martin MEP
The European elections on Thursday the 4 of June 2009 are the most important for working people and families for a decade.

Decisions are taken at the European level on matters such as working time, consumer rights, health and safety, paid holiday rights, water purity, maternity rights, and protection for children and trade union etc.

It was Labour MEPs that pushed through the European Social Chapter.  Now the Tories have pledged that if he ever gets into power he will reverse the Social Chapter and introduce anti-EU policies. Unless we get a big Labour vote at the European Elections and a strong Socialist Group in the European Parliament we will lose all the social advances we have fought for over the last decade.

The main focus of the Party of European Socialist manifesto for the European Elections is a pledge to create 10 million jobs by 2020 through investment in transport infrastructure projects and environmental protection.

The programme calls for all member states to increase support for developing countries to fight climate change. The Socialist Party reckons that 2 million jobs could be generated by renewable energy projects alone. There is also a demand for a ‘more competitive and affordable high speed rail network between major EU cities and regions'.

A strong group of Labour MEPs in a majority Socialist Group in the European Parliament is the best way of delivering the kind of fairer European society we want to create. I look forward to meeting you on the campaign trail.

Welcome from Catherine Stihler MEP
The European Union is making a real difference to the lives of people living in Scotland and beyond. Labour have achieved so much for Scotland in Europe, from improving working conditions, to reinforcing product safety and protecting the health and well being of all EU citizens.

On the 4 June 2009, each and every one of us has been given the opportunity to decide how we want to shape Scotland in Europe and the dividing lines are clear.  The Socialist Group puts people first and for many years Labour in Europe championed the cause of workers' rights, the local environment and keeping our children safe.  All EU citizens have the right to vote on June 4. This is your chance to vote for the Scotland in Europe you want.

Today, we face a number of important global challenges. The turmo il in the global financial market has revealed the true importance of European co-operation and the need for greater regulation. Contrary to what many Conservatives say, economic crises are avoidable. By working together we can create more and better jobs, reduce poverty and prevent new financial crises.

Europe has the ability to be a leader in innovation. Efforts to reduce climate change are already generating new jobs all over the world and there is a great potential that Scotland will benefit directly from the EU's new energy and climate change policies. In December 2008, Labour MEPs supported a wide reaching and ambitious climate change package. The new agreement will lead to a 20 per cent cut in greenhouse gases by 2020 (compared by 1990 levels) and a 20 per cent increase in the use of renewable energy sources. Labour MEPs are at the forefront of work to tackle climate change and save the plant for future generations.
